Position Summary

Assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for the activities and operations of maps and records maintenance; ensure work quality and adherence to established mapping standards, policies and procedures and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis. 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geography, computer science, geographic information systems (GIS), or engineering; and

One (1) years drafting, design or cartography experience; and 

To include one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

 

  • Operations, services and activities of an automated utility and/or planning mapping and records management program
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Principles and practices of GIS Software applications
  • Specialized mapping and graphics techniques
  • Modern and complex principles and practices of database design
  • Principles of computer mapping and records management
  • Operational characteristics of geographical information systems (GIS) and software
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations

 

Preferred Skills & Abilities

 

  • Use modern GIS software to add, edit, and modify various map layers
  • Direct the maintenance, updating and publishing of various maps
  • Plan, organize, and review the work of lower-level staff
  • Coordinate, develop and maintain an automated mapping and records system
  • Develop and implement new systems and infrastructure record keeping
  • Direct the use of geographic information systems software and hardware
  • Interpret and explain City policies and procedures
  • Develop, interpret and explain departmental mapping policies and procedures
  • Perform field operations, site visits and inspections on construction sites
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including officials and the general public
