Research Planning, Inc. (RPI) has a current opening for a Geospatial Scientist/Quantitative Ecologist with
expertise in oceanography, marine science, water quality, limnology, or related fields; geospatial data
synthesis and analysis; and computer programming. The position will support the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a member of an interdisciplinary team developing models that
forecast harmful algal blooms (HABs). The goal of this work is to improve forecasts for these blooms
through the integration of various environmental data sets, including field observations and model
output. This position will design and build automated real-time data pipelines and scripts to access
complex oceanographic and satellite datasets; develop and maintain custom operational GIS products
and web applications that convert complex datasets into decision-support tools; and support the
development and validation of HABs models. This is a remote position but could be filled by candidates
desiring an office setting or proximity to colleagues in potential locations such as Charleston (SC),
Columbia (SC), Tallahassee (FL), or Silver Spring (MD).


Responsibilities:
• Developing processes and scripts for accessing and structuring data sets.
• Developing scripts that will allow ready graphical and statistical analysis of data and models.
• Developing scripts for comparison of satellite data with field data.
• Assist in development and validation of HAB models.
Qualifications:
• M.S. degree in oceanography, marine science, ecology, limnology, geospatial sciences, physics,
mathematics, computer science, or related field, with four (4) years of work experience
including geospatial data integration. Applicants with an equivalent combination of education
and experience may qualify.
• Programming experience in Python, C++, Java, JavaScript, or other programming language, and
statistical software, preferably in R or applicable Python libraries.
• Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
• Understanding of databases and remote data access, and of multiple formats and types of
scientific computing data.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and drug screening
