POSITION SUMMARY

The Center for Geospatial Science and Technology (CGST) at California State University, Northridge is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented GIS Project Manager to support and advance the Center’s applied geospatial initiatives.

Reporting to the Center Director, the GIS Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the full lifecycle of geospatial projects, from proposal development through execution and delivery. This role combines technical GIS expertise, project management, and team leadership. The Project Manager will lead project teams, manage client relationships, mentor student research assistants, develop project documentation, and support the ongoing growth of CGST’s geospatial capabilities.

CGST partners with public agencies, private industry, nonprofits, and research organizations to deliver high-impact, real-world geospatial solutions. Our work spans applied research, data development, and decision-support tools that address complex environmental, infrastructure, and community challenges.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage GIS projects from initiation through completion
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, and proposals
  • Coordinate and supervise project teams, including assigning and reviewing work
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, partners, and stakeholders
  • Ensure quality control, data integrity, and adherence to project standards
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, workflows, and metadata
  • Support development and implementation of GIS tools, applications, and training
  • Supervise, mentor, and train staff

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography or a related field with a GIS focus or certificate
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 2 years in project management
  • Strong proficiency in Esri ArcGIS Pro and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Solid understanding of GIS principles, including spatial analysis, projections, and data management
  • Experience with hydrography or elevation-derived data workflows (e.g., DEM processing, watershed delineation)
  • Experience developing and managing ArcGIS Online applications (e.g., Dashboards, Experience Builder)
  • Experience developing project documentation (workflows, metadata, standards)
  • Experience with budgeting, proposals, and tracking expenditures
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and coordinating staff
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Esri Arc Hydro tools
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, or other programming languages
  • Experience with spatial statistics
  • Familiarity with open-source GIS tools (e.g., QGIS)
  • Experience with mobile GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123)

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is based on the CSUN campus in an office environment with a low-to-moderate noise level. Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds may be required. A hybrid work arrangement may be available following onboarding.

Compensation & Benefits

This position is employed through The University Corporation (TUC) at CSUN and includes a comprehensive benefits package. 

Anticipated hiring range: $40 - $45 per hour ($83,200 - $93,600 annually) depending on qualifications and experience.

FLSA classification: Non-exempt

Relocation expenses are not offered for this position.
